Pinwheel Galaxy – Messier 101

The Pinwheel Galaxy is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major. The galaxy is about 16.000.000 LJ away from us and has an expanse of 170.000 LJ.

Object Names

Another catalog numer of Messier 101, M101 is NGC 5457. In optical neighborhood we can see the dwarfgalaxy NGC 5477 and the galaxy NGC 5473.

Apparent size of Messier 101

The apparent size of the Pinwheel Galaxy, M101, in comparison to the Moon, which has an apparent size of approximate 0,5°.
The apparent size of the Pinwheel Galaxy is about 28,8 x 26,9 arc-minutes. The size in diameter counts about 170.000 lightyears.
In my photo i was able to expose and show a size of about 20 arc-minutes.
